       The $25 Challenge

Could you eat on $25 a week?

September is National Hunger Action Month.  Tri-State Food Bank is challenging community leaders in the Tri-State to eat for a full week spending just $25.00.  This challenge is real to many people who are forced to face it every day.  $25 is the average amount that a person who receives food stamps is allotted.  Presenting this challenge to elected officials, reporters, religious leaders, and other concerned people will provide the opportunity, to those who are daring and caring enough to try it, more insight to the hardship many of our citizens face.

As a leader in our community, we are asking that you take the challenge. If you have the valor, please pick any week during the month of September to commit to the challenge.  We suggest September 22-28 as we are also participating in the Illinois Food Bank Association Challenge set for that week.  Several Illinois legislators and media organizations have already committed to the challenge.  Since Tri-State Food Bank also serves counties in Indiana and Kentucky, and Vanderburgh County is home, we are broadening our scope for participation in the challenge.

As our community leaders take up the "Pledge to Participate" in the $25 Challenge, we hope their experiences bring awareness to the difficulties related to this very real issue.

Can you image what it must be like to be food in-secure...Not just for yourself, but for your children?

The sharply rising cost of food makes it very difficult for struggling families, individuals, and seniors throughout the tri-state to have enough food to provide adequate nutrition and sustain a healthy life.  The food pantries we serve are seeing an increasing number of people turning to them for food assistance.

The Challenge:

bullet

For one week during September, spend just $25.00 on food.

bullet

Refrain from eating free food at meetings and conferences, as these are not generally options for people who rely on food stamps.

bullet

Refrain from tapping food supplies already in your household.

bullet

Keep a diary of your thoughts throughout the challenge and share your experience.

bullet

Encourage your colleagues and friends to take the challenge.

"Pledge to Participate" and return to this site to share your thoughts and experience.

I, will act to help raise awareness to alleviate hunger in the tri-state by taking the $25 Challenge during a week in September "Hunger Action Month".
