The strength of the food assistance network is contingent on strong partnerships between the Tri-State Food Bank, the community organizations and faith-based partners that operate neighborhood food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, and our community leaders in the tri-state of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.

These objectives will help us move forward with the following initiatives:
  • Increasing food resources.
  • Working toward a healthier Tri-State by increasing the nutritional value of the food assistance provided.
  • Building the capacity of our member agency partners so they can distribute more and healthier food to the families and individuals in need throughout the tri-state.
  • Targeting areas of unmet need in our 33 county service area that is in the most urgent need of additional food assistance.
  • Developing new programs to reach vulnerable groups such as our youth, elderly, and disabled.
  • Creating outreach activity.
  • Compiling important information so we can determine the impact in the community in terms of meals served.  
  • Increasing SNAP enrollment to help supplement food assistance for those who need it and bring in federal dollars to help simulate our local economy.
  • Increasing “Pounds Per Person in Poverty” per county.

About our Keynote Speakers

  • Meal Gap Analysis - ELAINE Waxman, Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy 
Elaine Waxman is Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy for Feeding America. In this role, she is responsible for all Government Relations functions including advocacy, legislative affairs and public policy. She leads the organization in meeting the related 2012 strategic planning goals and shapes the research agenda. Under her leadership, Feeding America released Hunger in America 2010, the largest study ever conducted of emergency food assistance in the United States   In 2009, Waxman joined Feeding America as Director of Social Policy Research and Analysis. Prior to this, she conducted and worked on several research projects. Her research focused on lower-income groups of families and children, recipients of SNAP and other public benefits, workforce development and adult learning.   Waxman’s previous employment includes work at Managed Care and Health Policy Consulting, an independent consulting practice. Additionally, Waxman has held the position of Vice President of Marketing at Green Spring Health Services, Director of Environment and Strategic Analysis at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and Senior Consultant in the Public Sector Practice at KPMG Peat Marwick. She began her professional career at the American Hospital Association.   Waxman holds a doctorate from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, a master’s degree in public policy studies from the University of Chicago, and bachelor’s degrees in English and political science from Indiana University.   Currently, Waxman is on the Board of Directors for Chicago Fair Trade and is the social action coordinator for the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation. 
  • SNAP Outreach - Brittani Evans - Peoria Area Food Bank SNAP Outreach Coordinator 
Brittani Evans graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor's in Sociology and from Heartland Community College with an Associate's Degree in Arts. She is the McLean County SNAP Outreach Coordinator for the Peoria Area Food Bank in Illinois. Ms. Evans worked in residential treatment with mental health service for two years, was the YWCA McLean County site coordinator for two years, and served as administrator in food service at Illinois State University for five years. Ms. Evans presented her research at The National Ethnographers Initiative Conference in 2010, as well as the Annual Graduate and Undergraduate Research Conference. 
 

About our Workshop Facilitators

  • Food Life – Handling and Storage - SUSAN PLASSMEIER, Purdue Extension 
Susan Plassmeier is an Extension Educator with Purdue Extension in Vanderburgh County. Susan has been employed with Purdue Extension for 27 years and her area of expertise is Consumer and Family Sciences with an emphasis on Health and Wellness. Susan has taught a wide variety of programs like: Dining with Diabetes, Raising Healthy Easters, Professor Popcorn (nutrition education of school-age children), Hand washing for a Healthier You, and many others. 
  • Disaster Preparedness – Sherman Greer – Director of Emergency Management Agency - City of Evansville-Vanderburgh Co. 
After serving in the US Air Force from 1966-1970, Sherman began his career in Indiana’s Emergency Medical Services, which has lasted for 32 years and serving as Director of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency for the last 20 years. Mr. Greer was appointment to the Indiana Public Safety Training Institute in 1991-2002.  In 1995 he was appointed to the Indiana Emergency Response Commission and is serving his second term as a commissioner, chairman of the Communications Committee, and editor of the State newsletter. Other accolades are: serving as a delegate at the US/Japan Symposium in 1996, conducting two major earthquake exercises in 1990 and 1993, coordinating the interface with local, state, and federal agencies. In 1997 he had SEMA staff participate in a multi-state earthquake exercise at Fort Smith, AR.
  • Partnering for Homeless Prevention – Luzada Hayes, ACSW, LCSW, Executive Director of Aurora, Inc. and Resource Coordinator for Destination: Home 
Luzada has worked with disadvantaged persons of Evansville for the last nineteen years. She is currently the Executive Director of Aurora Inc. Luzada has been instrumental in the development and implementation of Evansville's 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. She also serves on boards and steering committees for several community-based organizations and initiatives; such as, the Emergency Food and Shelter Board for Vanderburgh County, Evansville, Homeless Services Council of Southwest Indiana, Evansville Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Evansville, Vanderburgh Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the Indiana Coalition on Housing and Homeless Issue.  Luzada was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003 by Governor Joseph Kernan and the Distinguished Hoosier Award by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2007. Her commitment to ending homelessness and promoting economic development is truly an asset to the state.  Lazada also was awarded the Michael Carroll Community Economic Development Leadership Award for exceptional advocacy to further support the community economic development industry in 2008. 
  • Safe Places – Stacy West – Safe Place Coordinator
Stacy West joined Hillcrest Washington Youth Home as Safe Place Coordinator in December, 2010. Stacy was previously owner/director of Foundations Education & Counseling Services since 2001.  Stacy has been working in the local mental health/social services field since 1987. Stacy served as Crisis Line Coordinator and Juvenile Court Programs Supervisor with the Youth Service Bureau until 1993, and later as Director of Community Services with Deaconess Cross Pointe.  Stacy’s scope of experience includes crisis intervention, substance abuse education and treatment, and program development. She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Indiana. 
  • IL USDA Training - GERRAH CALDWELL, Illinois Department of Human Services 
Gerrah Caldwell graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a double BA in communications and Spanish. She has worked for the Illinois Department of Human Services since 2001. She spend the first 6 1/2 years developing and managing the Homeless Prevention Program, which provides short-term rent, mortgage, utility, and security deposits assistance to households at risk of homelessness. She also spent one year managing “Team Illinois”, a top-priority Governor’s initiative worth a mission to pool and focus Illinois resources in communities that have been underserved and have a demonstrated need for improvements. She now serves as the Manager of the Emergency Food Program. What she is most honored about is the wonderful opportunity to partner with amazing social service organizations that spend each day working and volunteering to positively impact the lives of others. Gerrah is a loving wife to her husband Darryl and mother of three young boys Trae, Trenton and Trevan. Gerrah considers herself a life learner, who relishes opportunities to learn and grow. 
  • IN USDA Training - DENISE CIALDELLA-GIDDENS, Indiana State Department of Health 
Ms. Giddens is the Program Director for TEFAP, CSFP, WIC and Senior Farmer’s Market programs for the State of Indiana based at the Indiana State Department of Health. Her work is enhanced by her not for profit experience, strong ability to network, fact find and direct multiple projects simultaneous. She has been directly involved with targeting areas for farmer’s markets, successfully identifying producers and working to create access to local product in areas that are considered food desserts. Ms. Giddens is an executive board member of the National Association of Farmer’s Market Nutrition Programs. Her understanding of supplemental and entitlement food programs allows for increased referral opportunities and cross promotional education. Ms. Giddens enjoys gardening, saving green space and volunteering. 
  • KY USDA Training - Kevin Peach, Kentucky Department of Agriculture – (Speaker may change. Bio to be updated) 
Kevin is the Training Development Specialist II for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Division of Food Distribution.
